August 29 & 30, 2011 A Non Working Holiday in the Philippines

MalacaƱang announced that August 29 (Monday) and August 30 (Tuesday) are non-working holidays (walang pasok).

August 29 is National Heroes’ Day while August 30 is Eid’l Fitr or the end of Ramadan of our Muslim brothers and sisters. So plan your holiday well because it will be a long weekend.

In a radio interview, deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte clarified that August 1, the start of Ramadan, is not a holiday.

“Nakausap ko ang chief of staff ni executive secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr. Ang sabi nila, August 1 hindi holiday. Ang magiging holiday, August 30 (Martes), ang end of Ramadan,” Valte explained.

Proclamation No. 84 states that the observance of Eidul Adha is a national holiday, but the date may be moved. Section 2 of the proclamation provides:
“The proclamations declaring national holidays for the observance of Eid’l Fitr and Eidul Adha shall hereafter be issued after the approximate dates of the Islamic holidays have been determined in accordance with the Islamic calendar (Hijra) or the lunar calendar, or upon Islamic astronomical calculations, whichever is possible or convenient. To this end, the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) shall inform the Office of the President on which day the holiday shall fall.”
