Typhoon "Juaning" leaves RP 41 dead

The death toll due to tropical storm “Juaning” has reached 41, while 24 remain missing, latest data from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council showed. NDRRMC said most of the fatalities came from Albay (11), Camarines Norte (7) and Catanduanes (6).

Meanwhile, 4 people died in Ifugao, 2 each in Camarines Sur, Cavite, Quezon Province and Masbate, and one each in Iloilo, Siquijor, Las Piñas, Nueva Ecija and Marinduque. The onslaught of the tropical storm also left 23 people from the Bicol region, and one from Romblon missing.

A total of 790, 601 persons or 158, 441 families were affected by the storm, said NDRRMC. As of 6 a.m. on Friday, 17,990 families are still in evacuation centers nationwide. A total of P9.4 million was released by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and local government units to assist affected residents.

Residents have yet to recover from the damage left by Juaning, which was pegged by NDRRMC to be at P1.02 billion for infrastructure, and P110.9 million for agriculture. The towns of Guagua, Mexico and Sto. Tomas in Pampanga are still submerged in water.

In Malinao, Albay, meanwhile, a state of calamity was declared by the local government after mud covered most parts of the town. A landslide also occurred in Guinobatan town around 11 p.m. on Thursday, leaving 9 families homeless, and prompting authorities to impose a forced evacuation on residents
