How to End a Facebook Hack

Well as we all know facebook an  online social networking site gives us a convenient way to stay in touch with friends, family and colleagues.Unfortunately, it is also a tempting target for hackers. The wealth of private information shared on Facebook can make it a goldmine for would-be identity thieves. Facebook can also be used to spread malware, which can compromise data or take control of a user's computer.

Password Security

The first step to protecting your Facebook account is to make sure you have a strong password. A good password contains both letters and numbers in a hard-to-guess combination. Change your password every month, if not every week. Keep to the rule of one account, one password -- if you use the same password for all your online accounts and one gets hacked, all your accounts are vulnerable, including Facebook.

Computer Security

Hackers can use malware such as trojans to harvest information, including your Facebook login. If your computer is secure, it's harder for hackers to do any damage. Install all recommended updates for your operating system and software. Use a firewall. Install at least one anti-malware system and keep it updated. Run regular scans to check for malware that could give hackers a back door.

Social Engineering

The strongest password in the world is no good if you give it away. Never reveal your password to anyone. If you share your computer, don't allow your browser to save your Facebook login details. It may be tedious to type them in every time but if your details are saved on the computer, any other user can take over your account. Be suspicious of emails asking for your login information; these can be phishing scams designed to trick you out of your information. On Facebook itself, be circumspect when adding friends. Only add people you know. If you get a friend request from someone you don't recognize, message him to ask how you met.

Rogue Apps and Facebook Scams

Apps can make Facebook a more enjoyable experience. Be careful when you install a new app, however, as rogue apps can effectively take control of your Facebook account, posting links and performing other actions in your name even when you are logged out. Facebook scams bait users with links to interesting-sounding news stories or prize giveaways; however, the site the link takes you to can compromise your account and your computer system. It may be an attack site that infects your computer with malware or a clickjacking site that causes your Facebook profile to recommend it to your friends. You may be asked to download a file containing hidden malware. Survey scams trick you out of personal information.

If Your Account is Hacked

If your Facebook account is hacked, you should immediately report the attack to Facebook's security team. If the hacker hasn't changed your password, you can log back in. You should change your password. If they haven't changed your email, you can recover your login by having Facebook email you a new password. Make sure everyone on your friends list knows about the hack -- their information may have been compromised too.
